Frequently asked questions
What should I do first after water damage?
Stop the source at the nearest valve, keep away from water near electricity or sewage, and photograph the damage. Then call a restoration contractor and your insurer. Full steps: first-hour checklist.
How long does water damage restoration take?
Extraction takes hours; drying usually takes three to five days with commercial equipment, longer for slabs and hardwood. Rebuilding drywall and flooring is a separate step afterwards.
How soon can mold grow after water damage?
The EPA advises drying water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Materials that stay wet longer are at high risk.
What is the difference between water mitigation and restoration?
Mitigation stops the damage: extraction, removal of wet materials and drying. Restoration is the rebuild afterwards: drywall, flooring, paint. Estimates usually price them separately.
Can I do water damage restoration myself?
A small spill on tile, yes. Water that soaked carpet, drywall, cabinets or subfloor needs moisture meters and commercial drying equipment, because hidden wet material grows mold.
How much does water damage restoration cost?
National 2026 data puts mitigation at about $3 to $7.50 per square foot and the average job near $3,867. Orange County jobs usually run higher. See cost.
Does homeowners insurance cover water damage in California?
Sudden, accidental losses such as a burst pipe are usually covered; slow leaks, flood and sewer backup usually are not without extra coverage. Your policy's water damage section decides.
Who is responsible for a sewer backup in Huntington Beach?
The City is responsible for the sewer lateral from the main to the property line; the owner is responsible for the section on their property. See sewage backup cleanup.
Do restoration contractors need a license in California?
Repair or rebuild work of $1,000 or more requires a CSLB license. Water mitigation itself is trained rather than licensed; look for IICRC certification.
Is HB Water Damage a contractor?
HB Water Damage is an independent referral line. It connects callers with independent contractors and does not do the work. See How it works.
Who pays for the referral?
Contractors pay HB Water Damage a referral fee for connected calls. Callers pay nothing to the line, and the fee does not change the contractor's price.
What hours does the line answer?
The line answers 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Pacific, seven days a week.
