In short

Water damage restoration in Cerritos means extracting water and drying single-family homes built mostly in the late 1960s and 1970s, served by city water and sewer lines now 40 to 60 years old. An independent referral line connects Cerritos homeowners with an independent contractor who does the work.

Houses that went up almost at once

Cerritos incorporated in 1956 as Dairy Valley, a town of about 4,000 people and 120,000 cows, LAist reports. A zoning change in March 1965 allowed denser housing on smaller lots and opened the way for large-scale building, and the city took the name Cerritos in January 1967. Census estimates put the median year built at 1974, and about 80% of homes are detached houses. Original supply lines and drains from that building wave are now roughly 50 years old.

City water pipes from the same decade

The city's water utility moves water through about 181 miles of pipe to an estimated 15,350 homes and businesses. A December 2025 staff report, covered by Los Cerritos Community News, said about 70% of those pipelines were installed between 1966 and 1974 and have produced a growing number of leaks and emergency repairs. A break on a street main can flood a front yard or garage before crews close the valves.

A sewer network with root and crack problems

The same report described 116 miles of city sewer pipe and six pump stations, 40 to 60 years old, built of materials prone to cracking, corrosion and root intrusion. When a main or a house lateral blocks, sewage comes up through the lowest drain in the home.

Wells showing their age

Cerritos draws its water from three deep wells, 640 to 1,000 feet down, and groundwater met all of its supply in 2024. In October 2025 the C-4 well began pulling in silt and gravel and was taken out of service. The mayor said the city's water and sewer infrastructure is "aging, deteriorating, and in some cases failing."

Leak happening now? Here is what to do

  1. Shut the main valve. On a detached Cerritos house, check the outside wall where the supply line enters, usually on the street side. In a townhome, look in the garage or water heater closet.
  2. Turn off breakers for wet rooms if the panel is in a dry spot.
  3. Sewage in a tub or floor drain? Use no water anywhere in the house. Keep children and pets out of that room.
  4. Report a street leak to the city. During business hours call Cerritos Public Works; after hours, on weekends or holidays, the city's answering service takes water emergencies at (562) 860-4018.
  5. Photograph the damage. Record each wet room and the source before cleanup begins.

How the contractor restores the home

The contractor applies the IICRC S500 water restoration sequence. The crew the contractor sends inspects the house and maps moisture under flooring, in walls and in cabinets. Standing water is extracted, and materials that cannot be dried, such as wet pad, baseboard and drywall, are cut out. Air movers and dehumidifiers dry the structure while the technician logs readings until each material reaches its dry goal, then the area is cleaned and the job documented for insurance. Sewage from a blocked line is Category 3 water, so porous materials it contacts are removed.

Cerritos homeowner questions

Why does Cerritos seem to have so many water main leaks lately?

City staff reported in December 2025 that about 70% of water pipelines were installed between 1966 and 1974 and are past their typical service life. Engineers recommended replacing about a mile of pipe a year.

Who do I call if water is bubbling up in the street at night?

The City of Cerritos runs its own water system. After hours, on weekends or holidays, call the city's answering service at (562) 860-4018.

Does insurance cover a burst pipe but not a slow leak?

California's insurance department lists sudden and accidental water damage as typically covered and seepage or leaks as generally excluded. See water damage restoration cost for what shapes the bill.

Is HB Water Damage the contractor that comes out?

HB Water Damage only makes the connection. The independent restoration contractor pays a referral fee for the call, then quotes and does the work, and the line never bills you.
