The ground was a swamp first
The city's own history says residents called this area "Gospel Swamps" from the 1880s into the early 1900s, and the name Fountain Valley came from its many artesian wells. Settlers dug drainage canals in the 1890s to make the land farmable, which is why grading and yard drains still matter here.
